Considering ISO 27001?

Whether you're looking to protect sensitive information, strengthen cybersecurity, meet customer expectations, satisfy contractual requirements or demonstrate your commitment to information security, ISO 27001 provides a recognised framework for managing information security risks.

As organisations become increasingly dependent on digital systems, data and technology, effective information security is more important than ever. ISO 27001 helps businesses identify risks, implement appropriate controls and establish confidence in how information is managed and protected.

What is ISO 27001?

ISO 27001 is the internationally recognised standard for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS).

It provides a structured framework for identifying, assessing and managing risks to information, whether that information is held electronically, on paper or through knowledge and processes within the organisation.

The standard supports organisations in protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) of information whilst promoting continual improvement and risk-based decision-making.

Applicable to organisations of all sizes and sectors, ISO 27001 helps establish a systematic approach to information security management.

What is ISO 27001 Certification?

ISO 27001 certification is an independent assessment of your Information Security Management System by a Certification Body.

We strongly recommend selecting a UKAS-accredited Certification Body to ensure certification is independently recognised and accepted by customers, procurement organisations and other stakeholders.

Certification provides independent verification that your Information Security Management System meets the requirements of ISO 27001 and is being effectively implemented throughout the organisation.

What Does the Certification Process Involve?

Gap Analysis

A review of your existing information security arrangements to identify strengths, areas of conformity and opportunities for improvement against the requirements of ISO 27001.

System Development and Implementation

Developing a practical Information Security Management System that reflects your organisation's activities, information assets, security risks and business objectives whilst satisfying the requirements of ISO 27001.

This may include:

  • Information Security Policy development
  • Information security risk assessments
  • Asset identification and classification
  • Risk treatment planning
  • Information security objectives
  • Roles, responsibilities and accountabilities
  • Incident management arrangements
  • Business continuity considerations
  • Supplier and third-party controls
  • Statement of Applicability (SoA)
  • Supporting documented information

Internal Audit Programme

Developing and implementing an internal audit programme to verify that the Information Security Management System has been effectively implemented and is achieving its intended outcomes.

Internal Auditing

Conducting internal audits to assess conformity, identify opportunities for improvement and support readiness for certification assessment.

Corrections and Corrective Actions

Supporting the investigation of findings, the implementation of corrections and the development of effective corrective actions where required.

Management Review

Reviewing the performance and effectiveness of the Information Security Management System to ensure it remains suitable, adequate and effective.

Stage 1 Audit

The Certification Body reviews documented information and management system arrangements to determine readiness for Stage 2 assessment.

Stage 2 Audit

A detailed assessment of implementation and effectiveness throughout the organisation. Auditors will review records, sample activities, assess processes and interview personnel to determine conformity with ISO 27001 requirements.

Recommendation for Certification

Where the Information Security Management System is found to conform to the requirements of ISO 27001 and any audit findings have been satisfactorily addressed, the organisation may be recommended for certification following completion of the Stage 2 assessment.

Certification Decision and Certificate Issue

The Certification Body completes its independent certification decision process before certification is issued.

Annual Surveillance Audits

Certification is maintained through annual surveillance audits, which assess continuing conformity and the ongoing effectiveness of the management system.

Recertification

A recertification audit is typically undertaken every three years to maintain certification and demonstrate continued compliance with the requirements of the standard.

How Long Does Certification Take?

There is no fixed timescale for achieving certification. The duration of the certification journey will depend on several factors, including:

  • Size of the organisation
  • Complexity of operations
  • Scope of certification
  • Information security risks
  • Existing management systems
  • Availability of resources
  • Number of locations
  • Current level of compliance

A Gap Analysis can help determine the level of support required and establish a realistic route to certification.
